What our purpose is for data collection

When you visit IKANOW or use an IKANOW “service” we may collect information about people, places or things which we call entities or events. The purpose of our service is aggregate massive amounts of information from publicly available data sources to help people make better and quicker decisions. From this data we attempt to make correlations based on the information collected and provide meaningful results to our end users. This information includes data about events that might of occurred, people, organizations, places, facilities, etc. we call metadata. Our system also makes attempts to add temporal guesses (we call this prediction) on on the information to enrich it further to make it more discoverable. We only harvest data that is contained in our master sources list and data and feeds that is supplied by our end users. (we do not crawl data). We expect to grow all of these capabilities in the future and provide updates to our community as they occur on new and interesting ways to look at our information.

We store our harvested data for long periods of time. This is done so that we can run our cool statistics against the data to try to come up with meaningful tools and conclusions. The information we harvest is limited to publicly available information posted online or that is commercially available. We are not a Internet Search Engine but rather a Knowledge Discovery Engine that grows based on the data that our users supply us. On that note if you would like to add a source or link please add it via our interface. If you see something that looks incorrect from a source please let us know so that we can attempt to correct it and we will respond to your request as deemed appropriate.


What do we do with the information you provide us

When you register for our services you will be asked to provide certain demographic data about yourself, including information that can identify who you are including but not limited to: name, address, email address, billing (for credit card processing), etc. We do not share this information with anyone outside our system without your consent and only use to provide you with the best service possible.

When you utilize our services at IKANOW, issuing queries, posting data, viewing a visualization, or subscribing to results, a log of these types of activities are recorded in our server log files. These types of logs are not examined at a low level (not the raw data level) and are not part of the core information we are attempting to collect. We only examine this type of information to investigate system usage in a effort to provide you with a better service. We only collect usage information on a opt-in basis. For example if you wish to share or save a query or share or save a data source you are subscribed to you can choose to do so. We only expose that information to other users when you explicitly make that decision.


Your communication with us

When communication is established with us, we reserve the right to retain the communication medium in order to service the request, inform you about changes to the service and improve our services through your feedback. We offer several forms of communication beyond our native web applications. These are all in the form of an opt-in system and can be delivered via email, and through mobile applications. You have complete control over these services and can subscribe and modify the frequency as you see fit. When you access an IKANOW service this is accessing web servers, network devices and other electronic computer assets. All of these assets collect log information that that may include your date and time of the request, browser type, browser language, Internet Protocol address, approximate geographic location, data and content that was included in the request, and cookies that identify your web browser. If a malicious intent attack attempts to access any of our resources we reserve the right to use this information to protect the integrity of your information and our services.



When you utilize IKANOW services, we may establish a cookies on your browser. Cookies by definition are a small file stored locally on your computer or device that helps us uniquely identify your Internet browser session. When you return, we will attempt to identify if the cookie or cookies exist in order to re-instate your session. We do not share any information contained in these cookies with anyone other than yourself.


When you find us and when you leave

IKANOW reserves the right to collect to information about how to link to us and from us. What this means is that we may collect information about the website you came to us from and collect information about the link you clicked on, when you leave us. This information is collected to help us provide a better overall service and provide our business a greater level of understanding of our customers.



IKANOW does not share your personal information with any other companies or individuals except for the following: Consent – We use opt-in approaches for sharing. We will not share your nonpublic information except to deliver services to you unless you affirmatively allow such sharing. If you share this data with third parties, this is, of course consent to such sharing. Legal Requirements. If IKANOW becomes involved in a merger, acquisition, or any form of sale of some or all of its assets, the assets of IKANOW may include “information assets” including the information we have collected about you. In that event, we will continue ensure the confidentiality of any personal information involved in such transactions and provide you with notice before any of your personal information is transferred and may become subject to a different privacy policy.


Using aggregated information to improve our service and your experience

We may use information we have collected from you, using our services to improve our services to you or others, examples might include information about what you are looking for in our applications and those results delivered. This would be in a effort to deliver more targeted results. We may share aggregated information with third parties but this information will not include any personal information. Information shared will not be able to identify you or your searches or results tying them back to your user information.

Information assurance and quality

Since the basis of our service is to aggregate information from publicly available sources, our information is only as accurate as the source in which it being collections from. This being the case we cannot remove information contained in the original source material (blog, website, posting, or other source). If the information you see concerning a posting is inaccurate, is it likely due to the source material making up the content. We ask before you question the validity of any our data, you research the material further to validate the accuracy of the information provided. We do not take any steps to validate the accuracy of information processed by our harvesting system and do not have the technology to do so.


Keeping your personal information up-to-date

When using IKANOW services we provide with tools to keep you personal information up to date. We make a concerted effort to ensure that this data is available for you to keep accurate or remove (delete) at your request it is not deemed to be retained for legitimate business purposes. We ask individual users to identify themselves and the information requested to be accessed, corrected or removed before processing such requests, and we may decline to process requests that are unreasonably repetitive or systematic, require disproportionate technical effort, jeopardize the privacy of others, or would be extremely impractical (for instance, requests concerning information residing on backup tapes), or for which access is not otherwise required. In any case where we provide information access and correction, we perform this service free of charge, except if doing so would require a disproportionate effort.


Compliance and Enforcement of the policy

At IKANOW we take your privacy very seriously. We perform regular reviews as part of our engineering and quality assurance process to ensure compliance with the policy. Please be aware that this privacy policy will change from time to time and will be reflective of our updates to the service and business mission. When changes occur, they will be posted and will be made publicly available on this page. Most changes anticipated will be minor in nature but if a significant change is expected, more formal notice will be given through the service and email notification If you continue to use the service after the change this will be viewed as providing your consent to the change.

The new version privacy policy is created on every major modification release. We keep a archive of all versions and are available upon formal request.
